Retrieval via reconstruction
Rebuild the whole concept from a handful of core cues without looking back, testing structured ownership, not scrap recall.
When to use it
- Free recall dumps facts but you cannot rebuild the organised whole from a spine.
- You recognise a full page of notes and mistake that for ownership.
- You have a concept map or organiser and want a cold reconstruct from a few nodes only.
What to ask AI
Type something like: “Give me only these cues, central dogma, transcription, translation, and don’t show my notes. I’ll reconstruct protein synthesis; afterward score missing structure versus trivia.”
Give three to six cues, not a full outline.
Ask it to score missing relations separately from missing trivia.
How it helps
Experts reconstruct from spines.
Giving yourself only cues prevents the illusion that recognising a full page means you own it.
The failure mode differs from free recall: missing relations, not only missing facts.
How to run it
- Choose three to six cues (not the full notes).
- Rebuild the concept, map, or argument from those alone.
- Compare to the source and mark missing relations.
- Tighten cues next time if reconstruction was too easy, or enrich if it was impossible.
- Schedule spaced reconstructions.
Example exchange
Give me only these cues, demand curve, supply curve, equilibrium price, and don’t show my notes. I’ll rebuild market equilibrium from them.
Reconstruct it now. Paste when you’re done.
Demand slopes down, supply slopes up, they cross at equilibrium. Above that price there’s surplus; below, shortage; price adjusts toward the crossing.
The backbone is there. What’s missing: when does a curve shift versus when do you just move along it?
I blanked on that. A shift is a change in a non-price determinant; a movement along is a price change.
Add “shift versus movement” to tomorrow’s cue set. A forgotten elasticity number would be trivia; this relation is structure.
Copyable prompt
Give me only these cues: [ ]. Don’t show my source notes until I submit.
I’ll reconstruct [topic]. Afterward, score missing structure versus missing
trivia.
The Tell
You know this method has flipped when you can free-recall pages of facts and still cannot rebuild from the spine.
Cues that are already a full outline make the test fake.
Rebuilding trivia lists without relations is not reconstruction.
Principle evidence
Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.
The underlying learning idea is rated strong. Rebuilding a concept from core cues is retrieval practice / the testing effect (Roediger and Karpicke). Structured reconstruction targets organised ownership.
AI delivery evidence
Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.
AI gap-finding after reconstruction is speculative in quality. The principle is strong; whether a chatbot scores ‘structure vs trivia’ well is unproven, keep your source as the final judge.
