Concept mapping
Build and defend a network of relations between ideas, making structure visible so study stops being a bag of terms.
When to use it
- Your notes are a bag of terms with no named links.
- You can define nodes but freeze when asked how two ideas relate.
- An AI-generated map looks pretty and you never drew or defended a link.
What to ask AI
Type something like: “Here is my concept map in text form. Help me identify its three weakest connections, then ask me to justify them one at a time. Do not rebuild the map for me.”
You draw first; it critiques link quality.
Ask it to pick weak links at random for defence, not to redraw the network.
How it helps
Concept maps force named links: causes, is-a, part-of, opposes.
That naming is understanding work.
AI can critique link quality and missing nodes; it should not draw your first map for you.
How to run it
- List eight to fifteen key terms.
- Connect them with labelled arrows on paper.
- Defend each link in one sentence.
- Let the AI attack weak, missing, or wrong-direction links.
- Revise, then reconstruct from memory later.
Example exchange
Here’s my concept map: variation gives natural selection something to act on. Natural selection changes allele frequencies, and inheritance allows those changes to continue across generations. Which connections are weakest?
Let’s start with variation and selection. Is variation alone enough for natural selection, or must something else differ?
Individuals with different traits must have different chances of surviving and reproducing.
Exactly. Add fitness differences or differential reproductive success between variation and changing allele frequencies. Now explain that connection in your own words.
Copyable prompt
Here is my concept map in text form for [topic].
Help me identify its three weakest connections, then ask me to justify them
one at a time. Do not rebuild the whole map for me.
The Tell
You know this method has flipped when the map is pretty and you cannot explain a link when pointed at randomly.
Unlabelled lines are decoration.
If the AI built the map and you only admired it, you practised recognition, not structure.
Principle evidence
Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.
The underlying learning idea is rated moderate. Concept mapping has a substantial education literature (Novak tradition) on making relations explicit. Effects depend on map quality and feedback.
AI delivery evidence
Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.
AI map critique is speculative. Automated redraws are especially risky because they steal the construction work that makes the method work.
