When to use it

  • Your best insights live in old chats you cannot search or reconstruct.
  • You want notes that compound across weeks, not disposable summaries.
  • You can find a file but blank when asked to rebuild the idea without opening it.

What to ask AI

Type something like: “Here are new atomic notes I wrote: [ ]. Suggest links and missing questions only. Do not rewrite them prettier. Then quiz me closed-book on five atoms.”

Ask for structure and holes, not a rewritten second brain.

Keep the hard part on your side: you write atoms; the AI links and quizzes.

How it helps

A living knowledge base is a growing structured record you can rebuild without the file open, notes that compound instead of chat debris.

The learning check is reconstruction: if the vault is huge and your mind is blank, you built a library, not knowledge.

AI helps with links and missing questions. It should not become the author of your notes.

How to run it

  1. Write atoms in your own words after a session, one idea per note.
  2. Ask the AI only for possible links and unanswered questions.
  3. Refuse rewrites that make the notes sound smarter than your understanding.
  4. Close the files and take a short closed-book quiz on random atoms.
  5. Repair the notes that failed retrieval; that repair is the learning.

Example exchange

You

I added two notes to my knowledge base: osmosis needs a semi-permeable membrane, and water moves toward higher solute concentration. Suggest links or missing questions only. Don't rewrite my notes.

AI

Those two belong together through net water movement. One missing question before you add more notes: what happens if the membrane also lets the solute through?

You

Water would not build up a lasting difference; both sides would even out.

AI

Close. Close your notes and say it again with concentration and membrane in the sentence.

Copyable prompt

Here are new atomic notes I wrote: [ ].
Suggest links and missing questions only. Do not rewrite my notes into prettier prose.
Then quiz me on 5 random atoms closed-book.

The Tell

A huge notes vault with a blank mind when the file is closed means the system stored words, not learning.

If the AI rewrote your atoms until they sounded expert, you practised editing, not understanding.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

The underlying learning idea is rated moderate. Living knowledge bases relate to durable note systems and generative note-making, with retrieval and reconstruction as the real tests. Elaborative notes plus retrieval beat passive storage; specific “second brain” tools are less settled.

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

AI linking and quizzing can support the habit, but delivery quality depends on whether you still write and reconstruct. Auto-generated wikis are a common false win.
