Choose the right study method for the situation you're actually in, and defend the choice, which is what stops you defaulting to re-reading.

When to use it

  • You are about to open your notes and default to re-reading because it feels responsible.
  • You know many techniques and still use the same three for every situation.
  • You have a time box and an assessment type and need the method matched to both.

What to ask AI

State time, topic, assessment, and your planned method. Ask it to ask three situation questions, then verdict whether the plan matches, and what your plan would have been good for.

Afterwards: “I did X and the result was Y. Was the strategy wrong, or the execution?”

Forbid a lecture on ten alternative methods. You want a defended choice.

How it helps

Knowing many methods fails in an obvious way: you will use three of them badly, because choosing is harder than executing and nobody teaches choosing.

Feeling is a bad chooser here. Re-reading and highlighting feel productive and often teach least. Methods that work feel like failing because retrieval attempts miss.

Strategy selection is the judgement the rest of this guide depends on. Everything else is a tool; this is which tool.

Almost every choice reduces to your state with the material, the failure mode you are hitting, how long you have, and what the assessment will actually ask.

How to run it

  1. Before the session, write what you were going to do anyway.
  2. Ask for three questions about your situation (state, failure mode, time, assessment), then a verdict on your plan.
  3. Require it to say what your instinctive plan would have been good for, often first encounter, misapplied to consolidation.
  4. Run the matched method. Protect the hard part on your side.
  5. Afterwards, ask whether failure was strategy or execution, and how you would tell the difference.
  6. Do not collect methods. Two well-matched methods beat ten sampled.

Example exchange

You

I've got fifty minutes for organic mechanisms before a short-answer exam. I was going to re-read my notes and rewrite them neatly. Does that match what I need?

AI

One question first: have you already met these mechanisms in class, or is this first contact?

You

We've met them. I freeze on which mechanism to use. The exam asks me to produce from a prompt.

AI

Re-reading helps first contact; for you it mostly trains recognition. What's one practice format that forces you to choose the mechanism closed-book?

You

Mixed prompts where I have to pick the path, then check.

AI

Do that for the fifty minutes. Save neat rewriting for day-one orientation, not tonight's selection problem.

Copyable prompt

I'm about to spend [time] studying [topic] for [assessment]. My plan is to
[what you were going to do]. Before I start: ask me three questions about my
situation, then tell me whether my plan matches it. If it doesn't, say what I
should do instead and why, and tell me what my plan would have been good for.

The Tell

If you have used the same three methods for everything all term, the odds that they fit every situation are poor.

Choosing by comfort is usually choosing against consolidation. If the AI only lists techniques without interrogating your situation, it is not coaching selection.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

Moderate: strategy selection is conditional knowledge in self-regulated learning, knowing which technique fits which material and goal. Benefits depend on matching, not on knowing more technique names.

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

AI strategy advice is often generic. Force situation questions and a defended match. Delivery is speculative; your honesty about state and assessment type carries the method.
