Strategy post-mortem

Name the exact strategy used in a study block and rate it against alternatives, so you improve method choice, not only content coverage.

When to use it

  • A study block just ended and you can describe what you covered but not which strategy you used.
  • Every post-mortem concludes “I need more hours” rather than a different method.
  • You want to rate tonight's strategy against two alternatives with reasons.

What to ask AI

Name the strategy you actually used. Ask how it compares to two named alternatives for this material and goal.

Ask whether the outcome failure (if any) was strategy or execution.

Refuse hour-count as the only conclusion.

How it helps

Content post-mortems ask what you got wrong. Strategy post-mortems ask how you studied, and whether a different method would have trained the skill the assessment needs.

“More hours” is the default conclusion that protects a weak method. Naming the strategy makes alternatives discussable.

AI can compare strategies only after you name what you really did, including drift.

How to run it

  1. Write one sentence: the strategy you actually used (e.g. re-read then blocked problems with notes open).
  2. State the goal of the block (exam type, skill).
  3. Ask for a comparison with two alternatives and a verdict: keep, tweak, or replace.
  4. Separate strategy miss from execution miss.
  5. Install one change next block, not a whole new system.

Example exchange

You

Tonight's block: re-read the chapter, then fifteen same-type problems with notes open. Goal is an exam with mixed novel prompts. Can you critique the strategy?

AI

You trained recognition and execution with cues. For mixed novel prompts, what alternative would match the exam better?

You

A closed-book mixed set.

AI

Was tonight's pain low difficulty, or low effort on choosing a strategy?

You

Low difficulty, it felt easy.

AI

Replace the next block: forty minutes mixed closed-book. Same hours, different strategy. Report what percentage you could start cold.

Copyable prompt

Strategy post-mortem.
What I actually did: [strategy + drift].
Goal/assessment: [ ].
Compare this strategy to two alternatives. Verdict: keep / tweak / replace.
Separate strategy failure from execution failure. Forbid "more hours" as the only advice.

The Tell

If every post-mortem concludes “I need more hours,” you are protecting the method from scrutiny.

Hours multiply a strategy, they do not choose one.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

Moderate-to-strong conceptually: evaluating strategy quality is conditional knowledge in self-regulated learning. It complements content error analysis.

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

AI comparisons can be generic. Force named alternatives tied to your assessment type. Delivery speculative.
