When to use it

  • Your working is on paper and typing it in would silently “fix” the mistake.
  • You want the first error located on the page you actually wrote.

What to ask AI

Type something like: “[Image of my working] Do not solve from scratch. Locate the FIRST error, what I seem to believe, and one question to unstick me. Stop.”

Ask for first-error diagnosis only, not a full worked solution.

Keep the hard part on your side: you answer the unsticking question and repair the page.

How it helps

Authentic paper working carries the real error. Transcription into chat often erases it.

Locating the first error, and the belief behind it, is formative feedback in the tutoring tradition: stop at the break, do not flood with the full solution.

How to run it

  1. Photograph clear working.
  2. Forbid solving from scratch.
  3. Get first error, believed rule, and one question.
  4. Answer the question and fix that line on paper.
  5. If you need a full loop with redraw and re-check, move to Handwriting-to-feedback loop.

Example exchange

You

Here's a photo of my chain-rule attempt. Please don't solve it. Just find the first error and what I seem to believe.

AI

First error on line 2: you differentiated inside and outside as if you were adding separate derivatives. You seem to think the chain rule is "derivative of each piece, then add." What operation actually combines the outer derivative with the inner one?

You

Multiply. Outer derivative at the inner function, times the inner derivative.

AI

Stop there. Repair line 2 on the page. Don't ask me for the simplified answer yet.

Copyable prompt

[Image of my working] Do not solve from scratch. Locate the FIRST error, what I
seem to believe, and one question to unstick me. Stop.

The Tell

Here is how you know this method has flipped: the chat explains beautifully and the paper is still wrong in the same spot.

Diagnosis without repair is theatre.

Fix the line on the page before you ask for anything else.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

The underlying learning idea is rated moderate. Locating the first error in authentic work is formative assessment and worked-error analysis. Keeping the paper (via photo) removes transcription as a silent fix.

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

Handwriting misreads are common. Verify that the cited “first error” is really on your page before you trust the belief diagnosis.
