Error visualisation

Have your own mistake turned into a diagram that makes the error obvious, so the wrong model becomes visible, not only marked wrong.

When to use it

  • You were marked wrong and the verbal correction is already fading.
  • You “get it” in words but still draw the old wrong picture.

What to ask AI

Type something like: “My wrong approach: [ ]. Draw/describe what this misconception looks like visually, then the correct picture beside it. Ask me to explain the difference. Do not skip the wrong picture.”

Insist on seeing the wrong model drawn, not only the right one.

Keep the hard part on your side: you explain the difference and redraw both.

How it helps

Verbal corrections fade. A diagram of what your misconception implies, wrong free-body, wrong shading, wrong number-line jump, sticks and generalises.

Skipping the wrong picture leaves the old model invisible and alive.

How to run it

  1. Show your wrong answer or approach.
  2. Ask for a visualisation of the error, then the correct picture beside it.
  3. Explain the difference in your own words.
  4. Redraw both from memory.
  5. Optionally log the error type for later review.

Example exchange

You

I shaded the region y greater than x squared as if it were under the parabola. Can you show what my mistake looks like next to the correct shading?

AI

Wrong panel: shading tucked under the curve. Correct panel: shading above the curve, outside the bowl. Which inequality idea did you flip?

You

I treated greater-than as "inside the shape" instead of "greater y."

AI

Redraw both panels cold. If the wrong one still appears first from muscle memory, the contrast hasn't stuck yet.

Copyable prompt

My wrong approach: [ ].
Draw/describe what this misconception looks like visually, then the correct
picture beside it. Ask me to explain the difference. Do not skip the wrong
picture.

The Tell

Here is how you know this method has flipped: you “get it” verbally and still draw the old wrong picture.

If only the right diagram was shown, the misconception never had to compete.

Redraw wrong and right until the contrast is automatic.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

The underlying learning idea is rated moderate. Diagramming what a misconception implies is error-based learning: the wrong model made visible, then contrasted. It pairs naturally with visual misconception probes and error-specific remediation.

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

AI error-diagrams may mis-draw your actual mistake. Treat delivery as speculative; ensure the “wrong panel” matches what you really did.
