Visual analogy
See the same structure drawn in an unrelated domain, transferring relational structure visually, then stress-testing the map.
When to use it
- A structure only clicks when you see it dressed in another domain.
- You have a verbal analogy but need a drawn structural twin you can map.
What to ask AI
Type something like: “Target structure: [ ]. Propose a visual analogy in [domain]. Describe/draw both. I will map parts. Then force break points. Finally I redraw the target alone.”
Ask for a drawn structural twin, then break points, not a cute story only.
Keep the hard part on your side: you map and redraw the target without the analogy.
How it helps
Some relations click only when seen in another dress, circuits beside hydraulics, org charts beside call stacks.
Draw both, map parts, then name where the analogy lies. Living only in the analogy leaves the real structure behind.
How to run it
- State the target structure precisely.
- Get or draw the analogy-domain figure.
- Build a mapping table (analogy part → real part).
- Stress-test: name break points where the map fails.
- Redraw the target without the analogy.
Example exchange
I've drawn a water-pipe picture for a simple series circuit. I think the pump is the battery and the narrow section is the resistor. Where is this map weak before I redraw the circuit alone?
Start with pressure. What do you map pressure to on the circuit side?
Pressure is voltage. Charge is like how much water sits in the pipes, though that last one feels shaky.
That charge-as-volume idea is a break point: water can spill; charge in a wire does not leak the same way. Redraw the circuit with symbols only, and say Ohm's relation without any pipe words.
Copyable prompt
Target structure: [ ].
Propose a visual analogy in [domain or any]. Describe/draw both. I will map.
Then force break points. Finally I redraw the target alone.
The Tell
Here is how you know this method has flipped: only the analogy figure is memorable and the real diagram is gone.
Decorative similarity also fails, same vibe, different structure.
End by redrawing the target alone and naming one lie in the map.
Principle evidence
Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.
The underlying learning idea is rated moderate. Drawn structural twins are structure-mapping in the visual modality: transfer via shared relations, then deliberate break points. Verbal analogy methods are cousins; this one insists on a drawn twin.
AI delivery evidence
Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.
AI visual analogies often map surface features. Treat delivery as speculative until you have forced break points and redrawn the target alone.
