Sketch-to-explanation

Describe your own rough diagram and have the gaps found, using your sketch as the object of critique, not a polished figure.

When to use it

  • You have a messy sketch that externalises your model and you need honest critique.
  • Vision upload is unavailable, so you must describe the sketch in viewing order.
  • Your verbal explanation sounds complete while the drawing is missing arrows or labels.

What to ask AI

Type something like: “I sketched the nephron, here’s my description of what I drew. Find gaps and contradictions; ask clarifying questions first. Don’t replace my sketch until I’ve revised once.”

Describe what you actually drew, not the ideal textbook figure.

Ask for probes first; accept a replacement sketch only after one revision of yours.

How it helps

Sketches externalise your model.

Explaining them forces articulation; critique finds missing arrows, labels, and illegal conflations.

The object is your drawing, not a polished figure the AI prefers.

How to run it

  1. Sketch (messy is fine).
  2. Describe it in viewing order without correcting as you talk.
  3. Let the AI probe gaps and contradictions.
  4. Revise the sketch.
  5. Re-explain cleanly.

Example exchange

You

I sketched a free-body diagram for a block on a ramp: arrow down labelled weight, arrow up the ramp labelled friction, and I didn’t draw a normal. Where are the gaps? Please don’t replace the sketch yet.

AI

Is the weight arrow straight down the page, or perpendicular to the ramp? And where does the surface push?

You

Straight down the page. I forgot the normal.

AI

Missing normal is the main gap. Also say whether friction opposes the impending slide. Revise on paper, then re-describe. I still won’t paste a perfect diagram first.

You

Revised: weight down, normal perpendicular out of the ramp, friction up the ramp opposing the slide.

AI

Labels now match a consistent model. One more sentence: what would change if the ramp were frictionless?

Copyable prompt

I sketched [topic]. Here’s my description of what I drew: [ ].
Find missing relations, ambiguous labels, and contradictions. Ask clarifying
questions before assuming. Don’t replace my sketch with yours until I’ve revised
once.

The Tell

You know this method has flipped when the explanation names parts the sketch does not contain.

Describing the ideal textbook figure instead of what you drew hides the gaps.

Revise your sketch once before you accept anyone else’s figure.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

The underlying learning idea is rated moderate. Explaining your own sketch and finding gaps combines self-explanation with dual coding on learner-generated visuals.

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

How well AI can see or interpret sketches depends on modality (upload vs text description). Delivery quality is speculative; honest description is still required from you.
