Shadowing script generation
Read aloud in step with a modelled rhythm: building phonological and prosodic fluency for spoken language.
When to use it
- Your reading voice is flat and you need rhythm and stress practice, not another silent vocab list.
- You can decode a script with your eyes and still stumble when speaking in time with a model.
- Pronunciation feedback feels vague and you want one prosodic target for a short script.
What to ask AI
Type something like: “Create an 80-120 word shadowing script on ordering coffee at B1. Mark likely stress and pause points. Give tips for one prosodic feature. I will record myself; later I’ll paste issues I notice.”
Ask for a short script at your level, then actually speak with a timed model (text-to-speech or native audio).
Keep the hard part on your side: silent reading is not shadowing.
How it helps
Shadowing couples hearing and speaking: you talk with a model, not after a pause for translation.
That trains rhythm and melody, the parts of speech that silent study skips.
AI can draft a level-right script and mark stress. You still have to move your mouth in time.
The evidence base is more practical than glamorous; for pronunciation blocks, the practice is still real.
How to run it
- Get a short script at your level with stress or pause marks if useful.
- Hear a model once (text-to-speech or native audio).
- Shadow three to five times, speak simultaneously with the model.
- Record yourself and compare timing and intonation.
- Debrief one or two prosodic targets only, not every sound.
Example exchange
Could you write a short English script, maybe under a hundred words, for leaving a voicemail to reschedule? Mark stress and pauses, and give me one tip on the melody of it. I'll shadow it out loud and tell you what felt off.
Script is ready with bold stress and / pause marks. Tip: let pitch fall at the end of the apology, then rise a little on the new-time offer. Shadow aloud. Don't just read silently.
I kept speeding up on the phone number and flattening the apology.
Next pass: pause after the apology before the digits. Say the number in chunked pairs. One more recording, only those two targets.
Copyable prompt
Create a 80-120 word shadowing script on [TOPIC] at [LEVEL]. Mark likely stress
and pause points. Give practice tips for one prosodic feature. I will record
myself; later I'll paste issues I notice for critique.
The Tell
Here is how you know this method has flipped: you collect scripts and never speak them in time with a model.
Silent reading labelled as shadowing is just reading.
If there is no recording and no single prosody fix, you generated text, not speech skill.
Principle evidence
Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.
The underlying learning idea is rated weak. Shadowing, speaking in step with a model, is used in interpreting and pronunciation training. The evidence base is practical and mixed rather than a strong learning-science core. It can still help when the bottleneck is rhythm and timing.
AI delivery evidence
Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.
AI scripts without reliable timed audio are limited. The method depends on you shadowing a real model track. Treat generated stress marks as hints, and verify with audio you can trust.
