Teaching-material design
Turn a concept into a one-page teaching aid for a future student, then have it critiqued, because designing instruction exposes what you don't yet own.
When to use it
- You think you understand a concept and want a harder generative test.
- Teaching someone else is coming, or you want to simulate that pressure.
- Your notes are long and you cannot give a clean one-page aid.
What to ask AI
Type something like: “Here is my one-page teaching aid for [concept]: [ ]. Critique as pedagogy for [level]: missing objective, overloaded, unclear example, untested misconception, passive layout. Do not rewrite the page.”
Ask for pedagogy critique, not a prettier redesign done for you.
Keep the hard part on your side: you design and revise the aid.
How it helps
Teaching-material design turns a concept into a one-page aid for a future student, then has it critiqued.
Designing for someone else forces generative decisions: what is essential, what is the example, what misconception to head off.
A beautiful sheet you cannot explain in sixty seconds without looking means the page holds the knowledge, not you.
How to run it
- Pick one concept and a learner level.
- Draft a one-page aid: objective, core explanation, one example, one misconception check.
- Ask for pedagogy critique, missing objective, overload, unclear example, untested misconception, passive layout.
- Revise yourself.
- Close the page and give the sixty-second version aloud.
Example exchange
I pasted a one-page aid on covalent bonding for Year 10. Critique it as pedagogy. Don't rewrite the page.
What learning objective should a Year 10 student be able to do after this page that the page never states?
They should explain why shared electrons hold two atoms together, not only label a diagram.
Good. Add that objective yourself, then add one short check that catches the misconception that atoms want octets like feelings. Do not ask me to write the check.
Copyable prompt
Here is my one-page teaching aid for [CONCEPT]: [ ].
Critique as pedagogy for [LEVEL]: missing objective, overloaded, unclear example, untested
misconception, passive layout. Do not rewrite the page. Then ask me for a 60-second oral version.
The Tell
A beautiful sheet you cannot give as a sixty-second version without looking means the page did the understanding.
If the AI redesigned the handout for you, you practised commissioning layout, not teaching design.
Principle evidence
Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.
The underlying learning idea is rated moderate. Designing teaching material is generative learning / learning-by-teaching. Preparing to teach improves organisation and gap detection in a substantial research tradition.
AI delivery evidence
Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.
AI pedagogy critique is a speculative delivery layer. The generative work of designing the page, and the oral reconstruct, is where learning happens.
