Style analysis
Analyse how a writer achieves an effect, then attempt it, stealing craft on purpose instead of vaguely "reading good prose.".
When to use it
- You admire a writer's effect and only know how to praise it, not steal the craft.
- Your prose feels generic and you want deliberate moves, not vibe.
- A mentor passage is sitting open and you keep rereading instead of attempting.
What to ask AI
Type something like: “Mentor passage: [ ]. My paragraph: [ ]. List concrete stylistic moves in the mentor text with quotes. Then I will rewrite mine attempting 2-3 moves. Critique only craft transfer and fakery, no full rewrite.”
Ask for moves with evidence, not adjectives like “elegant.”
Keep the hard part on your side: you attempt the transfer.
How it helps
Style analysis means naming how a writer achieves an effect, then attempting it on purpose.
Praise without moves leaves your prose unchanged next week.
AI can help spot moves. You still have to perform them and notice fakery.
How to run it
- Pick a short mentor passage with an effect you want.
- Ask for concrete moves with quotes (syntax, rhythm, diction, stance), not vague praise.
- Rewrite your own paragraph attempting two or three moves.
- Ask for critique of transfer and fakery only, no replacement paragraph.
- Restate what you will try on the next piece without looking at the mentor text.
Example exchange
I pasted a mentor paragraph from Orwell and my own paragraph on the same topic. List concrete stylistic moves with short quotes from the mentor text. Don't rewrite me yet.
One move is a short clause after a long one for snap, as in his line about the ready-made phrase. Another is a concrete noun where you used an abstraction. A third is refusing filler intensifiers. Which one do you want to try first?
Here is my rewrite attempting the short-clause snap and the concrete noun.
The snap landed. The concrete noun still hides behind vibrant community. Replace that with a countable detail you choose.
Copyable prompt
Mentor passage: [ ].
My paragraph: [ ].
List concrete stylistic moves in the mentor text with quotes. Then I will rewrite my paragraph
attempting 2-3 moves. Critique only craft transfer and fakery, not a full rewrite.
The Tell
If you can praise a style and your prose is unchanged next week, you analysed for admiration, not apprenticeship.
If the AI rewrote your paragraph in the mentor's voice, you practised reading, not performing.
Principle evidence
Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.
The underlying learning idea is rated weak-to-moderate. Style analysis then imitation is craft apprenticeship. Plausible and widely taught in writing instruction; controlled evidence for AI-mediated style transfer is thin.
AI delivery evidence
Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.
AI move-spotting is uneven and can invent craft stories. Verify moves against the mentor text yourself; treat delivery as speculative.
