When to use it

  • Your draft feels organised in your head and chaotic on the page.
  • You planned an outline and suspect the finished text drifted.
  • A reader says “I lost the thread” and you cannot see where.

What to ask AI

Type something like: “Here's my draft. Produce a reverse outline: one sentence per paragraph saying what that paragraph DOES, not what it's about. Don't comment yet.”

Then ask where the reverse outline diverges from your intended plan.

Keep the hard part on your side: you decide what to cut, move, or rewrite.

How it helps

Reverse outlining extracts the structure you actually wrote, not the one you meant.

The gap between intention and page is where most marks live, and it is hard to see from inside the draft.

AI can list what each paragraph does. You still decide whether that structure earns the claim.

How to run it

  1. Paste the draft and ask for one “does” sentence per paragraph, no praise, no rewrite.
  2. Compare that reverse outline to your intended plan (or write the intended plan now).
  3. Mark paragraphs that repeat, wander, or fail to advance the argument.
  4. Reorder or cut yourself. Then regenerate the reverse outline once to check.

Example exchange

You

Here is my draft. Reverse outline only: one sentence per paragraph on what it does in the argument, not the topic. No comments yet.

AI

Paragraph 1 announces the puzzle. Paragraph 2 defines terms. Paragraph 3 narrates a case without stating a claim. Paragraph 4 asserts the thesis for the first time. Paragraph 5 lists policy options.

You

So my thesis arrives too late, and paragraph 3 is just sightseeing.

AI

Yes. What will you do to paragraphs 3 and 4 before any prose polish? Say the plan. I will not rewrite.

Copyable prompt

Here's my draft. Produce a reverse outline: one sentence per paragraph saying what that
paragraph DOES, not what it's about. Don't comment yet.

The Tell

If your reverse outline reads exactly like your original plan, you may be seeing what you meant, not what you wrote, demand behavioural “does” sentences.

If the AI rewrote paragraphs while outlining, you lost the diagnostic.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

The underlying learning idea is rated moderate. Reverse outlining is standard writing-instruction practice for revealing actual structure. It supports revision better than rereading for “flow.”

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

AI can summarise paragraph function quickly; accuracy still needs your judgement. Delivery is a convenience layer over a human pedagogical technique.
