Knowledge-gap mapping

Produce a map of what you know, half-know and don't know, so revision stops being a feeling and becomes a decision.

When to use it

  • Revision is about to start and you are allocating hours by feeling rather than by a map.
  • You keep polishing topics that already feel solid because they feel productive.
  • You suspect there are whole chunks of the topic you would not even know to study.

What to ask AI

Say: “I'm studying [topic]. I'll list everything I think it contains. Then tell me what I didn't mention; probe what I did; sort solid / shaky / absent with absent first.”

Follow up with hours left and ask what order to work in, and what to deliberately not revise.

Do not ask it to fill the map for you from scratch; your list is the starting point.

How it helps

A three-way sort, solid, shaky, absent, is not a score. It is a map with names you can act from.

A diagnostic quiz measures you with questions. Gap mapping interrogates the territory, including parts you do not know exist. You cannot fail a question you would never have been asked.

Revision without a map defaults to what feels urgent or what sits at the front of the notes. You revise what you already know, and you never revise what you do not know exists.

Asking “what does this topic contain that I haven't mentioned?” surfaces unknown-unknowns, the only category you cannot self-assess.

How to run it

  1. Pick one topic, not a whole course. Write everything you think it contains, from memory, for five minutes.
  2. Paste the list and ask what you failed to mention, treat that list as your blind spot.
  3. For each item you did mention, answer one probe question so solid versus shaky is checked, not self-rated.
  4. Receive the sorted map with absent items first.
  5. Given your hours, ask for an order of work and an explicit “do not revise” list. A plan that includes everything is not a plan.

Example exchange

You

I'm revising cell respiration. I think it covers glycolysis, Krebs, the electron transport chain, ATP yield numbers, and mitochondria structure. What am I missing?

AI

Possible blind spots: anaerobic pathways, regulation points, where reducing power comes from, shuttle systems. Before we map solid versus shaky, in your own words, what enters the Krebs cycle, and from where?

You

Acetyl-CoA from pyruvate… I think. I can't name the enzyme or where CO₂ leaves.

AI

Mark Krebs as shaky, not solid. With six hours left, which absent area will you protect first, regulation, or shuttles?

You

Regulation. Tomorrow evening, one hour.

AI

Good. Map gets updated after that hour, not from re-reading ATP yields.

Copyable prompt

I'm studying [TOPIC]. I'll tell you everything I think it contains. Then:
(1) tell me what's in this topic that I DIDN'T mention: that's my blind spot;
(2) for each thing I did mention, ask me one question to check whether I'm
solid or shaky;
(3) give me the whole topic sorted into solid / shaky / absent, with the absent
ones first.

The Tell

If your map has no “absent” items, you have not asked what you failed to mention.

Nobody's honest map is empty in that column. A complete-looking map is usually a comfort list.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

Moderate: knowledge-gap maps support metacognitive monitoring, judgments of what you know versus what you only feel you know. The distinctive move is surfacing unknown-unknowns, not scoring familiarity.

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

AI-filled maps can invent gaps or miss syllabus-specific items. Use AI to challenge your list and probe solidity. Treat its “absent” suggestions as candidates to verify against your course materials.
