Desirable-difficulty tuning
Deliberately make practice harder in the ways that help (spacing, interleaving, generation) without confusing "harder" with "cruel or chaotic.".
When to use it
- Practice always feels smooth and exams always feel alien.
- You are lowering difficulty until sessions feel good and learning stalls.
- You want harder practice in the ways that help, spacing, mixing, generation, not chaos.
What to ask AI
Describe current practice. Ask which desirable difficulties are missing (spacing, interleaving, closed-book generation, variation) and how to add one without making the task impossible.
Ask for a difficulty target: effortful but solvable with thought, not a wall.
Forbid “make it harder” with no mechanism.
How it helps
Practice that feels easy often trains recognition under familiar cues. Exams remove those cues.
Desirable difficulties are short-term effort that improves later performance: retrieval, spacing, interleaving, variation. Undesirable difficulty is confusion without a path.
Tuning means adding one helpful hardener at a time and watching whether later tests get easier even if tonight feels worse.
How to run it
- Name how practice feels now (too smooth, too crushing, mixed).
- Pick one desirable difficulty to add: close the notes; mix problem types; space the next review; generate before recognising.
- Keep success possible, shrink scope if needed so the hardener is survivable.
- Compare a later quiz to tonight's comfort. Expect comfort to drop and retention to rise if you tuned well.
- Diary the change if you want a longer record (desirable-difficulty diary).
Example exchange
My physics practice is twenty same-type problems with the formula sheet open. Exams still feel impossible. Which desirable difficulty am I missing?
You're training recognition with cues. Name one harder condition you could add tonight without making the set hopeless.
Maybe mix two problem types and put the sheet face-down?
Yes, keep it small: six mixed, sheet down, one-line cue only after two minutes stuck. Afterward tell me how many you could start cold.
Copyable prompt
My current practice looks like: [ ].
Exams/tests feel like: [ ].
Which desirable difficulties are missing (spacing, interleaving, closed-book
generation, variation)? Help me add ONE. Keep it effortful but solvable. Reject
vague "make it harder."
The Tell
If practice always feels smooth and exams always feel alien, you have been training comfort, not transfer.
Harder is not better when there is no path, that is undesirable difficulty. Name the mechanism you added.
Principle evidence
Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.
Strong research tradition on desirable difficulties (Bjork and related work): certain short-term hardships improve long-term learning. The principle distinguishes helpful hardeners from mere confusion.
AI delivery evidence
Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.
AI can suggest hardeners. It may also propose chaos or ego-threat tasks. Keep changes single, survivable, and tied to a named mechanism. Delivery speculative.
