Implementation intentions
Form if-then plans tied to specific times and places, so good intentions survive contact with your actual Tuesday.
When to use it
- You know what to do and still do not start when the time comes.
- Plans are beautifully worded and never paired to a clock and place.
- A pre-mortem named failures that need if-then fixes.
What to ask AI
Ask it to convert each intention into if-then form: if [time/place/cue], then [specific action].
Reject motivations without cues. Demand one friction removal (phone, location).
Keep the list short, a few strong if-thens beat ten soft ones.
How it helps
Goals say what. Implementation intentions say when and where the action starts.
“I'll study more” fails without a cue. “If it is 7pm and I sit at the library desk, then I open three closed-book problems” can be obeyed or failed, which means it can be improved.
AI helps tighten vague intentions into cue-action pairs. You must pick cues that actually occur in your week.
How to run it
- Take one planned study action you keep skipping.
- Write if [concrete cue], then [concrete first action].
- Add one friction removal tied to the same cue.
- Run it for five days; mark hit or miss nightly.
- Revise cues that never fire; do not add more intentions yet.
Example exchange
I want to do retrieval practice for biology, but it keeps not happening. Can you help me turn it into an if-then?
Draft with me: if it's a specific time and place, then what's the first action before any notes?
If it's 7:30 on weeknights at the kitchen table, then I write one free-recall page from today's lecture.
Does 7:30 actually happen in your week, or does something usually win?
Practice nights kill 7:30. 9pm after practice would work, same table.
Updated. Log hit or miss for five days. We only edit the plan after we see misses, not tonight.
Copyable prompt
Turn this intention into 1-2 if-then plans with real cues from my week:
Intention: [ ].
Constraints: [schedule realities].
Reject vague motivation. Include one friction removal. Keep it short.
The Tell
Beautifully worded intentions never paired to a clock and place are still wishes.
If every cue is “when I feel ready,” you have not written an implementation intention.
Principle evidence
Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.
Moderate-to-strong: implementation intentions (if-then plans) are a well-studied self-regulation tool for closing the gap between intention and action. Specific cues matter.
AI delivery evidence
Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.
AI can help phrase if-thens. It cannot invent cues that exist in your life. Delivery is speculative; hit/miss logging is the test.
