Decision under period information

Decide using only what was knowable at the time, including period tools and values, so hindsight stops masquerading as historical understanding.

When to use it

  • You keep judging historical actors with knowledge they could not have had.
  • You need to practise decision-making under incomplete period information.
  • Constraint-of-the-time (tools and values of the moment) belongs here: decide only with what was knowable then.

What to ask AI

Type something like: “I am a ship captain in 1912 facing ice warnings. Give me only period-knowable facts. Then ask for my decision and justification before you comment.”

Ask it to correct anachronistic knowledge I smuggle in, including modern concepts that were not thinkable then.

You decide first; feedback second.

How it helps

Hindsight makes past choices look stupid. Period information restores the real problem: acting under incomplete, noisy, and value-laden constraints.

This is applied historical empathy with a decision attached, not a lecture about “context.”

Merging the old constraint-of-the-time idea: tools and values count as constraints too, not only facts.

How to run it

  1. Name the role, date, and decision.
  2. Receive only period-knowable information; refuse later spoilers.
  3. Commit to a decision and a justification in writing.
  4. Ask where your justification used anachronistic concepts.
  5. Compare to what the historical actor did, without treating that as the only rational move.

Example exchange

You

I’m a hospital administrator in the early 1980s. There’s a mysterious immune collapse in clusters. Period information only, should I treat it as contagious?

AI

You have case clusters, no named virus yet, contested transmission theories, and political pressure. What do you decide, and what period evidence are you actually using?

You

I’d isolate with barrier nursing and report upward, citing occupational risk even without a named pathogen.

AI

Careful: “universal precautions” is later guideline language. Rewrite the justification in 1982 vocabulary, what would you have called the practice then?

Copyable prompt

Decision point: [DATE, ROLE, CHOICE].
Simulate period-constrained decision-making. First, interrogate me about what I
think was knowable; correct anachronistic knowledge. Then ask for my decision
and reasons using only that set, period tools, and period values. Only after I
commit, compare to what happened and classify: reasoning flaw then vs hindsight
only.

The Tell

You know this method has flipped when your write-up praises or condemns with facts the actor could not know.

That is moral hindsight, not decision practice.

If a modern concept appears in your justification, strip it and decide again.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

The underlying learning idea is rated moderate. Decision under period information is applied historical empathy / contextualization with an information constraint, forces avoiding hindsight bias. Principle moderate in history pedagogy; AI enforcement of “knowable then” is speculative.

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

The learning principle may be moderate, but that does not prove an AI session delivers it well. Treat AI delivery as speculative unless a study of tutoring with this method is named, and none is claimed here.
