Role reversal
Argue from the position you find least sympathetic , long enough to feel its internal logic, without abandoning evaluation.
When to use it
- You only ever argue your preferred side.
- A debate or ethics case needs you to inhabit the least sympathetic position.
- You steelman arguments already; now you need to inhabit a situation’s opposing seat.
What to ask AI
Type something like: “I will argue for the factory owner’s position in this strike case, the seat I find least sympathetic. Stay as my opponent coach: attack weak warrants, forbid caricature of workers.”
You must argue in first person from that seat.
How it helps
Role reversal builds understanding of a position from inside its incentives, not only as an abstract argument to steelman.
It is sibling to steelmanning, aimed at situations and roles rather than cleaned-up claims.
How to run it
- Name the seat you find least sympathetic.
- Argue from it in first person with real constraints.
- Forbid parody and cartoon motives.
- Let AI attack your weak warrants from the other side.
- Write what you now see that your preferred narrative hid.
Example exchange
I’ll argue for a university surveillance exam tool. Put me in the least sympathetic seat against myself and press hard.
As student counsel: your integrity claim assumes cheating base rates you haven’t shown. What numbers are you actually using?
We have anonymised incident counts from last year…
Incident counts are not base rates. Try again without smuggling certainty, what’s the denominator?
Copyable prompt
I will argue as [ROLE] on [QUESTION]. Stay as interviewer inside their world:
ask what I fear, want, and cannot admit. Do not help me mock them. After I say
EXIT, leave character and ask what I learned vs what I still reject and why.
The Tell
You know this method has flipped when your “reversal” is a parody that makes your real side look wise.
Caricature teaches nothing.
If you could not feel the incentives from inside, restart without mockery.
Principle evidence
Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.
The underlying learning idea is rated moderate. Role reversal / least-sympathetic position is perspective-taking and argumentation pedagogy (related to steelmanning). Principle moderate; AI-coached role play speculative.
AI delivery evidence
Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.
The learning principle may be moderate, but that does not prove an AI session delivers it well. Treat AI delivery as speculative unless a study of tutoring with this method is named, and none is claimed here.
