Dialectic

Work thesis → antithesis → synthesis on a contested question, ending with a position that kept what was true in both, instead of a mushy middle or a stubborn first take.

When to use it

  • A contested question has two partial truths and a mushy middle will not do.
  • You keep flipping between thesis and antithesis without a stable gain.
  • You want a position that kept what was true in both, not a stubborn first draft.

What to ask AI

Type something like: “Lead a dialectic on [question]. Phase 1: sharpen a thesis. Phase 2: force a full-strength antithesis. Phase 3: synthesis.”

Require that synthesis keep what was true in both, not a vague compromise.

Write each phase yourself before moving on.

How it helps

Dialectic here means thesis, antithesis, then a synthesis that preserves real insights from both.

It is not a polite average and not a stubborn first draft with extra adjectives.

The method trains you to let a strong counter-case change the shape of your claim.

How to run it

  1. State a sharp thesis (someone could disagree).
  2. Build the strongest antithesis that actually threatens it.
  3. Write a synthesis that keeps what survived from both. Name what you dropped.
  4. Test the synthesis against one objection from each prior side.

Example exchange

You

Thesis: coursework grades should be pass/fail to reduce anxiety.

AI

Antithesis pressure: without granular grades, feedback and selection signals weaken. Write the strongest version of that case.

You

If everything is pass/fail, later courses and employers lose information, and students get less precise feedback on where they stand, so anxiety might just move later.

AI

Synthesis has to keep a real anxiety benefit and a real feedback function. What do you keep from each side?

Copyable prompt

Lead a dialectic on [QUESTION]. Phase 1: help me sharpen a thesis (you ask; I
state). Phase 2: force an antithesis at full strength. Phase 3: require a
synthesis that keeps what was true in both, reject mushy middles. I write each
phase.

The Tell

If your “synthesis” is a longer restatement of your original thesis, you never let the antithesis land.

If the AI wrote the synthesis for you, you practised reading, not reconciling.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

The underlying learning idea is rated weak. Thesis-antithesis-synthesis is a familiar teaching pattern; rigorous evidence for this branded sequence as a superior learning method is thin. Treat it as structured argumentation practice.

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

AI-led dialectic can collapse into a scripted compromise. Your synthesis must be yours. Delivery is speculative.
