Unlimited near-variant drilling

Request as many near-transfer variants as you need until you hit your own mastery criterion. Stop for performance, not for a printed worksheet ending.

When to use it

  • The textbook offers three exercises and you need twenty near twins.
  • You are close to fluent and need volume without jumping to far transfer yet.
  • You have an exit criterion and need a generator that does not run out.
  • You keep stopping because the page ended, not because you could perform.

What to ask AI

Type something like: “Near variants only on [skill]. One at a time. No solutions until I attempt. Keep going until I hit [criterion] or stop.”

Forbid difficulty leaps into far transfer without your say-so.

Combine with criterion-based exit so volume has a purpose.

How it helps

Near variants build flexibility inside a family before you chase exotic contexts.

Human worksheets run out; AI does not have to.

Volume without a criterion becomes numb repetition, pair them.

Still attempt each item; generated piles you only read are worthless.

How to run it

  1. Name the skill and a near-variant rule (same principle, new numbers/surface).
  2. Set an exit criterion.
  3. Take items one at a time with attempts before answers.
  4. Adjust slightly harder/easier within near range based on outcomes.
  5. Stop when the criterion hits, or label a fatigue stop honestly.

Example exchange

You

Near variants on the chain rule with polynomials, one at a time. Exit when I get 5 correct in a row. No solutions until I attempt each one.

AI

Differentiate y = (4x−1)⁵. Attempt fully.

You

20(4x−1)⁴. I multiplied 5 by the inner derivative 4.

AI

Correct, streak 1 of 5. Next near variant: differentiate y = (3x+2)⁴.

Copyable prompt

Skill: [ ]. Near variants only (same principle, new surface details).
One problem at a time. No solution until I attempt.
Continue until I hit this criterion: [ ]. I may declare a fatigue stop.

The Tell

You will know the method has flipped when you generate a list of twenty variants and skim solutions to “feel prepared.”

Unlimited drilling without attempts is just an infinite answer key.

One item, one attempt, criterion visible, that is the method.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

High-volume practice on near variants supports procedural fluency when paired with feedback and a clear performance criterion. The generator removes artificial scarcity of items.

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

AI variants can drift farther than you asked or repeat clones. Reject drift; demand true near twins until you say otherwise.
