Generation-then-recognition
Generate the answer from scratch first, then see the options and compare, so multiple choice cannot do your thinking early.
When to use it
- MCQs feel easy because the options do the remembering for you.
- You want production practice even when the real paper is multiple choice.
- You keep recognising the right option without being able to say it unaided.
- You suspect your MCQ score overstates what you could write cold.
What to ask AI
Type something like: “Hide the options. I’ll write my answer first. Then show the choices and I’ll compare. Don’t confirm until I’ve done both steps.”
Paste the stem only, or ask the AI to withhold choices until you generate.
After seeing options, explain matches and near-miss temptations.
How it helps
Recognition is easier than generation. Options are cues.
If you only ever pick from a list, you may not be able to produce the idea alone.
Generating first forces retrieval; comparing second teaches you how the exam dresses the idea.
That order protects you from option-driven illusion of knowledge.
How to run it
- Cover or withhold the options.
- Write your answer as if it were short-response.
- Reveal the options and find yours, or see what you missed.
- Analyse distractors you find tempting.
- Restudy anything you could recognise but not generate.
Example exchange
Show me the stem only and hide the options. What is the role of NADPH in photosynthesis? I will write my answer first.
Waiting on your generated answer before any choices appear.
It carries reducing power to the Calvin cycle.
Options now: A) stores light energy as heat; B) carries reducing power to the Calvin cycle; C) splits water; D) fixes carbon directly. Which matches what you wrote, and which distractor looks tempting?
Copyable prompt
Give me the question STEM only, hide options.
I will write my answer first. Then reveal the choices. I will match or revise.
Do not confirm the key until I have both generated and compared.
The Tell
You will know the method has flipped when you peek at the options “just to get oriented” before writing.
Then generation never happened; recognition started early.
Literally cover the choices, paper sticky note works, until a sentence is on the page.
Principle evidence
Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.
Generation requires fuller retrieval than recognition. Practising generation before seeing options reduces reliance on recognition cues that inflate apparent knowledge.
AI delivery evidence
Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.
AI is mainly a withhold-and-release device here. You can do the same with a finger over the page; the principle does not depend on the model.
