Cloze deletion

Practise on your own sentences with key terms removed, so retrieval sits inside the wording you actually need.

When to use it

  • Definitions and mechanisms live in sentences you must nearly reproduce.
  • Ordinary flashcards feel disconnected from how the idea is written in the course.
  • You want a blank-in-context rather than a free-floating question.

What to ask AI

Type something like: “Here are sentences from my notes. Make cloze deletions, blank the key term or step. Show the gapped sentence only; wait for my fill-in.”

Ask for one blank per sentence unless you explicitly want nested clozes.

Tell it not to blank trivial words like ‘the’ or ‘and’.

How it helps

A cloze is a sentence with a hole. You retrieve the missing piece in context.

That context is often closer to exam wording than an isolated Q&A card.

Built from your sentences, it trains the exact phrasing your course uses.

Still retrieve before you peek; otherwise it is just reading with gaps drawn on.

How to run it

  1. Choose dense, high-value sentences from notes or a textbook summary you trust.
  2. Ask the AI to blank the load-bearing term or step.
  3. Fill the blank from memory.
  4. Check, then schedule fails sooner than easy hits.
  5. Rewrite any cloze that is guessable from grammar alone.

Example exchange

You

Here is a sentence: “NADPH provides reducing power for the Calvin cycle.” Make one cloze deletion and show me only the gapped version.

AI

NADPH provides ________ for the Calvin cycle. Fill the blank before I confirm.

You

Reducing power.

AI

That matches. Optional harder version next time: blank “Calvin cycle” instead, so you retrieve the destination, not only the familiar phrase.

Copyable prompt

Here are sentences from my notes:
[PASTE]
Create cloze deletions (one meaningful blank per sentence). Show gapped sentences
only. Wait for my answers. Flag any cloze that is guessable from grammar alone.

The Tell

You will know the method has flipped when the blank is so obvious from sentence shape that you never search memory, or when you glance at the full sentence first.

Then cloze became a formatting trick, not retrieval.

Blank a word you would actually have to know cold, and fill it before any reveal.

Principle evidence

Strength of the underlying learning idea, not a claim about AI products.

Cloze deletion is a cued-retrieval format widely used in spaced card systems. It supports memory when the blank targets meaning, not when grammar gives the answer away.

AI delivery evidence

Whether an AI tutor delivers this method well is a separate question.

AI-made clozes often blank the wrong word or too many words. You are the editor; keep only gaps that demand real recall.
